UK Heading in The Wrong Direction Says Clear Majority of Scotland

By Reporter, The HighLand Times, Tuesday April 11 2017

No confidence in Theresa May securing a good Brexit deal.

Further data from the recent Lord Ashcroft poll reveals that Scottish voters have no confidence in the direction the UK is currently travelling – with Theresa May’s approval ratings continuing to plummet across Scotland.

In a clear sign that Scottish voters desire a different approach to Brexit from that being taken by an increasingly hard-right Tory party, the poll revealed that 55% of people in Scotland felt that the UK was heading in the wrong direction – with a mere 27% who think it is on the right track.

A 64% majority of Scots have little or no confidence in Theresa May’s ability to negotiate a good Brexit deal.

The Ashcroft poll also showed that 55% of voters in Scotland think that the EU has the upper hand in Brexit negotiations, compared to just 15% who reckon the UK has the stronger hand.

Respondents also said that the bigger risk came from the Tories pursuing a hard Brexit that damages trade and international relationships, as opposed to the UK maintaining close ties with the EU.

Commenting, SNP MSP Stuart McMillan, who sits on the Scottish Parliament’s Europe Committee, said:

“These figures show in stark terms how disillusioned the people of Scotland are with the whole Brexit process – and little wonder.

“We didn’t vote for this Tory government, we didn’t vote to leave the EU, and we didn’t vote to be dragged out of the world’s largest market place.

“Brexit is by far the biggest threat to jobs and the economy in Scotland, potentially costing our economy around £11 billion from 2030, and 80,000 jobs over a decade.

“With no confidence in Theresa May’s ability to get anything close to a good trade deal, it is only right that people in Scotland have the opportunity to choose a different future when the terms of Brexit at clear – but before it is too late to change course.”
