Davidson Must Come Out of Hiding on Vile Rape Clause
Tory leader ducks for cover behind spokesperson
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has called on Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson to break her silence and condemn the Rape Clause.
The disgusting Tory policy requires tax credit claimants, whose third or subsequent child was conceived as a result of rape, to prove this to social workers and health professionals in order to qualify for an exemption to receive support.
Despite her claims to be an upfront, straight-talking politician, so far Ruth Davidson has hidden behind a Tory spokesperson as her party continues to defend the punitive and inhumane policy.
Nicola Sturgeon is calling on her Tory opponent to give her view in person.
Even Tory council candidates in the local government elections have lambasted the pernicious measures, describing the Rape Clause as “utterly appalling”.
Today Ruth Davidson has taken to Twitter to call for 20mph speed limits to be scrapped in Edinburgh city centre, but still refuses to back calls to scrap the Rape Clause.
Commenting, SNP MSP Gillian Martin said:
“To deny any woman tax credits for a third or subsequent child unless they can prove they have been raped is barbaric and utterly disgraceful.
“This Tory government at Westminster has stooped to a new low, even by their standards.
“And in Scotland, Ruth Davidson has gone into hiding – leaving a party spokesperson to defend the policy to the hilt while she tries to distance herself from this embarrassment.
“But it’s becoming untenable for Ruth Davidson to keep this up.
“She needs to give a clear, unequivocal statement on where she and her party stand on this vile policy.
“Does she truly believe – as her press office have stated – that making a woman whose third child was conceived as a result of rape relive the trauma and brutality of sexual violence is really ‘the most sensitive way possible’ to manage benefits?
“If she continues to dodge these tough questions, and refuses to condemn the Rape Clause, her silence will speak a thousand words.”
