Nationwide Campaign on Disabled Parking Needed, says MSP

By Reporter, The HighLand Times, Wednesday September 13 2017

A nationwide awareness campaign should be launched to crack down on motorists misusing disabled parking bays, the Scottish Conservatives have said.

MSPs heard today how the abuse of dedicated bays is still having a negative impact on disabled car users across the country.

That’s despite legislation being brought in eight years ago to get tough on drivers without a blue badge parking in disabled spaces.

Now the party’s local government spokesman Alexander Stewart has urged ministers to launch a Scotland-wide awareness campaign on the matter.

He said educating drivers about the importance of disabled parking spaces was the best way to ease the problem.

However, previous indications that such a campaign would be launched have so far failed to come to fruition, he added.

Scottish Conservative local government spokesman Alexander Stewart said:

“The success of disabled bays largely depends on the courtesy and consideration of other drivers.

“That’s why there should be some kind of national campaign to inform and educate motorists about the importance of these spaces.

“And while the government has appeared sympathetic to these pleas from campaigners, nothing has happened.

“Ministers have been shown all the evidence, but it’s fallen on deaf ears.

“I will be writing to the transport minister in a bid to persuade him that a campaign like this is absolutely essential.”
