Theresa May Held to Ransom Over Hard Brexit Demands

By Reporter, The HighLand Times, Monday November 13 2017

Call for PM to press the reset button on Brexit Strategy.

The SNP's Foreign Affairs and Europe spokesperson at Westminster has said that Theresa May is now "Prime Minister only by title," following revelations that leading hard Brexiteers Boris Johnson and Michael Gove sent a letter to Theresa May dictating Brexit demands.

The letter is reported to impose upon Theresa May a fixed date in June 2021 as the day for the end of the UK's transitional period after leaving the EU, as well as a thinly-veiled swipe at Cabinet colleagues lack of "sufficient energy."

Stephen Gethins MP commented:

"If it wasn't clear before, it is now - Theresa May has lost all authority and credibility in government.

"The revelation that leading Brexiteers Boris Johnson and Michael Gove are now brazenly able to dictate their hard Brexit demands over a month ago, goes to show that they think they can say and do as they please, knowing fine well Theresa May is powerless to act.

"Theresa May is Prime Minister only by title.

"The question that needs to be answered is what do Cabinet ministers have to do to be sacked?

"The very same discredited Foreign Secretary who has jeopardised the safety and well-being of British-Iranian citizen Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, is at the same time able to impose demands on how the government's Brexit negotiations should go.

“That is simply beyond belief.

"We are in the middle of crucial Brexit negotiations, and the Prime Minister is too busy reading one resignation letter after another, whilst her Cabinet are dictating demands - this cannot go on.

"Theresa May must press the reset button, take control of her chaotic Cabinet, and engage with parties across Westminster, and the devolved administrations to protect our economy, businesses and labour market from a plunge into the Brexit abyss."
