EU Withdrawal Bill
Scottish Tories must support efforts to protect devolution.
SNP Westminster Leader Ian Blackford MP has called on Scottish MPs to unite to protect devolution.
MPs will today have the opportunity to amend the EU Withdrawal Bill and stop the biggest Westminster power grab since the Scottish Parliament was set up.
The SNP is calling for Scottish Tory MPs to put the interests of Scotland ahead of the hard Brexit wing of their party and back the amendments.
Commenting, Ian Blackford MP said:
“A number of amendments designed to protect devolution will be debated today.
“The Tories need to show they are serious about protecting the Scottish Parliament and back the changes needed.
“In particular, clause 11 so fatally undermines the devolved settlements across the UK, both the Welsh and Scottish Governments have worked together in tabling amendments to the Bill.
“It’s clear to the legal profession and experts that Clause 11 has been drafted without proper understanding of devolution.
“It will mean Westminster taking control of all powers currently exercised through the EU – whether they are devolved or not.
“For the SNP it is clear.
“The Bill needs to be amended to ensure devolved powers - such as farming, fishing and food remain devolved.
“Progress has been made in talks between the Scottish and UK Governments on UK frameworks, but that cannot mean Westminster taking control over devolved powers, re-writing the devolution settlement and dictating policy.
“The EU Withdrawal Bill as drafted drives a coach and horses through the founding principles of devolution and represents a complete betrayal of promises made during the EU referendum.
“The Scottish Tories must today and support the SNP’s amendment and others changes – and protect devolution.”
