£1.2 Million Harbour Repairs to Begin in Portree

Work to repair the pier at Portree Harbour on the Isle of Skye is set to begin later this month after Highland Council awarded a £1.2 million contract for the project.

The contract has been awarded to Mackenzie Construction, with work scheduled to begin on the 23rd of March and expected to continue for around 24 weeks.

Portree Harbour plays an important role for local fishing vessels, marine operators and visitors travelling to Skye, making the condition of the pier a key piece of infrastructure for the community.

The programme of works will focus on repairing the existing pier structure to ensure it remains safe and reliable for harbour users.

Repairs will include concrete deck works along with repairs to the hexagonal piles and berthing face piles that support the structure.

Additional work will also include cathodic protection for steel components within the pier to help reduce corrosion and extend the life of the infrastructure.

Councillor John Finlayson, chair of Highland Council’s Isle of Skye and Raasay Committee, said the announcement marks an important step in maintaining the harbour.

“It is good to hear that this contract has been announced and after hosting a meeting recently with officers from many other services, I look forward to partnership working taking place between the council and the contractor to tackle other challenges that require attention at the harbour.”

Vice chair of the Isle of Skye and Raasay Committee, Councillor Drew Millar, said local harbour users were likely to welcome the improvements.

“I welcome the award of a contract for this work at the Portree harbour, and I am sure the Portree Community Council and Harbour Users’ group will also welcome the news of improvements.”

Mackenzie Construction has worked on infrastructure projects across the Highlands and Islands for many years and will oversee the repair works during the six month programme.

Managing Director Andy Dalrymple said the company was pleased to support the project.

“Having worked across the Highlands and Islands for many years, Mackenzie Construction is delighted to be partnering with Highland Council to support essential infrastructure on the Isle of Skye.”

Harbours across the Highlands play a vital role in supporting fishing, marine tourism and local transport links, making regular maintenance and upgrades important for coastal communities.

The repair works at Portree Harbour are expected to help safeguard the long term future of the pier while ensuring the harbour continues to support local economic activity.
