A £130,000 refurbishment programme is set to begin across several libraries in Moray in the coming months as Moray Council invests in community spaces while aiming to keep disruption to a minimum.
The first phase of works will take place at Forres Library, which will close from Saturday 14 February until Saturday 21 February to allow repainting to be carried out.
During the closure, a popup library service will operate in the Green Room at Forres Community Centre from Monday 16 February to Thursday 19 February between 10am and 5pm.
Customers will be able to collect reserved books, use public computers and access printing facilities during those four days.
Forres Library is scheduled to reopen on Monday 23 February at 10am.
The next phase will focus on Elgin Library, where the entire ground floor will be recarpeted, shelving rearranged and the Children’s Library area upgraded with new shelving and furniture in line with the refurbishment design proposal.
Elgin Library will close from 9 March to 30 March to allow works to be carried out safely.
When it reopens, new artwork will be in place as part of the refreshed space.
A popup provision will operate in the Gallery during the closure, with further details to be confirmed ahead of the works.
Buckie Library and Keith Library are also scheduled for redecoration in the coming months.
All other branches will be reviewed during 2026 and 2027, with a further programme of works to be considered if necessary.
Chair of the Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee, Councillor Kathleen Robertson, said:
“Investing in our libraries means investing in our communities.
“These improvements will create brighter, more welcoming spaces for people of all ages to enjoy.
“The improvement works are in-line with the feedback we’ve received through our library user groups.
“We’re grateful for the public’s patience while the work is carried out and look forward to reopening refreshed libraries that continue to support learning, creativity and connection across Moray.”
Further details on dates and temporary service arrangements will be shared once plans are finalised.
