Families across the Highlands and beyond can explore Scotland by train this October for just £50, thanks to a new initiative from ScotRail aimed at making school holiday travel more affordable.

The newly launched Family Pass offers unlimited travel on ScotRail services for seven consecutive days, covering up to two adults and four children.

It’s valid on all routes across the ScotRail network, giving families the freedom to visit towns, cities, coasts, and countryside without the cost of fuel or parking.

Travel can begin on any day between Monday 13 and Monday 20 October 2025, right in line with the autumn school holidays.

The pass is priced at £50 and available to purchase from Monday 6 October until 20 October from any ScotRail ticket office, or directly on the train.

Once activated, it offers unlimited off-peak travel, valid after 9.15am Monday to Friday, and all day at weekends.

ScotRail says it wants to help families enjoy the break without stretching household budgets.

“The Family Pass is designed to make it easier for families to enjoy days out together during the school holidays,” said Joanne Maguire, ScotRail Managing Director.

“For £50, customers can travel as much as they like for seven days, giving them the chance to explore Scotland in an affordable and sustainable way.”

With fuel and parking costs rising, the rail operator is highlighting the convenience of arriving directly into the heart of Scotland’s cities, towns, and visitor destinations.

Suggested day trips include a seaside escape to Troon, museum visits to Glasgow or Dundee, and nature-filled adventures around Aviemore and the Cairngorms.

The Family Pass also supports greener choices, encouraging people to leave the car at home in favour of lower-emission transport.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop MSP welcomed the move, describing it as a meaningful offer during a difficult economic period.

“At a time when many families are feeling the pressure of the cost-of-living crisis, ScotRail’s Family Pass offers a practical and affordable way to enjoy Scotland’s beauty during the October holidays while keeping more money in passengers’ pockets,” she said.

“It’s a great incentive to leave the car at home and choose a greener, more relaxing way to travel.”

Families can plan their journeys and get ideas for destinations on ScotRail’s Inspiration Hub, which includes tips on free attractions, outdoor spaces, and cultural highlights.

While the Family Pass is designed for school holidays, its structure mirrors calls for longer-term family-friendly rail deals to boost tourism and accessibility throughout Scotland.

ScotRail says the pass is part of wider efforts to improve affordability and encourage more people to travel by train.

Tickets are available at staffed stations or on board, subject to availability.
