A new round of funding has opened to support veterans and their families across Scotland, with the Scottish Government announcing a £500,000 allocation through the Scottish Veterans Fund for 2026.

The fund, designed to improve the lives of former service personnel, is now welcoming applications from projects offering support in areas such as employment, mental health, physical wellbeing, and financial assistance.

Since its launch in 2008, the Fund has provided more than £2.8 million in support to over 220 projects across the country.

For the first time, the 2026 fund will be split into two distinct funding streams to better tailor support and encourage a wider range of applications.

One stream will support larger projects lasting up to three years and focused on sustained, long-term support for veterans and their families.

The second will prioritise small-scale, one-year initiatives, particularly those that help bridge the gap between veterans and active service personnel, fostering greater community cohesion.

Veterans Minister Graeme Dey highlighted the importance of continued support for those transitioning from service to civilian life.

“Scottish veterans have provided a valuable service to their country, and returning to civilian life can be challenging for many, impacting families in ways that can be difficult to navigate alone,” Mr Dey said.

“The Scottish Veterans Fund has supported thousands of veterans and their families since its launch.

“Next year’s fund will continue to provide much-needed targeted support for our Armed Forces and veterans community, prioritising projects that address recommendations made by the Scottish Veterans Commissioner.”

Veterans groups, local charities, community interest companies and non-profits across the Highlands and Islands are being encouraged to apply.

The fund has previously supported a diverse range of initiatives from employment support and financial advice services to mental health counselling and community hubs.

This year, 14 organisations shared £460,000, delivering services that are having a measurable impact across Scotland.

Scottish Veterans Commissioner Susie Hamilton, who chairs the independent panel that assesses applications, welcomed the opening of the new round of funding.

“For those veterans and families who face challenges, effective support can make a profound difference, and I welcome the continuation of the Scottish Veterans Fund in providing that assistance,” she said.

“I hope to see many of the commendable projects delivering that expert help come forward for funding.”

Applications are now open and organisations are being urged to apply early.

Full guidance, criteria and submission information is available via the Scottish Government website or directly from the Scottish Veterans Fund page.
