Argyll and Bute Community Groups Invited to Apply for Local Benefit Scheme

Community groups across Argyll and Bute are being encouraged to apply for support through the council’s Community Benefit Scheme.

The initiative offers local organisations a chance to receive practical help or sponsorship from contractors working with Argyll and Bute Council.

Running since September 2020, the scheme is designed to deliver social, economic, and environmental value to local communities.

When awarding public contracts, the council asks suppliers to give back, whether that’s through donated materials, volunteer time, or mentoring opportunities.

Groups can request a wide range of support, including help with weeding or planting, building materials, decorating assistance, sports team sponsorship, or even apprenticeship placements.

Suppliers working with the council then choose from a list of community requests to see how they can get involved.

Serena Anderson from Oban Community Garden said their local project was made possible thanks to donated materials and a helping hand.

“The support we received was simple but made a huge difference,” she said.

“It meant we could get on with the work instead of worrying about how to afford it.”

The council says the scheme is part of its broader effort to make public contracts work harder for local people.

Local groups can submit their requests by emailing communitybenefits@argyll-bute.gov.uk, and approved ideas are added to a ‘wish list’ shared regularly with suppliers.

An online form and further guidance can also be found on the council’s website.
