Major investment is on the way to the Isle of Lewis as work begins on a transformative infrastructure project at Arnish.

A £7.2 million package of public and private funding will upgrade the full 3.3 kilometre stretch of Arnish Moor Road, creating a modern two-track route linking the A859 to Arnish Point, home to the Stornoway Deep Water Terminal and the Arnish Industrial Complex.

The project will improve access for freight, cruise ship traffic and offshore wind construction vehicles, unlocking new opportunities for the islands within Scotland’s growing renewable energy sector.

Funding includes a £3.4 million grant from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), part of the Scottish Government’s commitment to invest up to £500 million in offshore wind supply chain and port infrastructure over the next five years.

SSEN Transmission will contribute £3.4 million, while Stornoway Port, which will lead the works is investing £409,000.

Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes visited the site to officially break ground and praised the partnership effort behind the project.

“Stornoway’s location, skills and existing port infrastructure make it vital to delivering the enormous economic opportunities presented by Scotland’s growing offshore wind industry,” she said.

“This strategic public investment, matched by shared endeavour and ambition from the private sector, will ensure the deep water terminal and the increasingly important industrial cluster at Arnish Point are equipped to meet demand and attract further investment.”

HIE Director of Operations Joanna Peteranna said Arnish is perfectly positioned to play a central role in Scotland’s renewable energy expansion.

“Arnish is a tremendous asset for the Outer Hebrides with great potential to expand its contribution to Scotland’s growing renewable energy sector.

“Offshore wind represents a huge opportunity for the Highlands and Islands, and Arnish is central to realising that potential.

“Its location and advanced infrastructure make it an ideal base for offshore wind and wider energy developments,” she said.

Director of Offshore Delivery at SSEN Transmission, Sandy Mactaggart, said the investment reflected a long-term commitment to the Western Isles.

“Our contribution of £3.4 million in funding to support the Arnish Road upgrade is testament to our ambition to deliver a positive legacy for communities through our Lewis Hub project,” he said.

“The road upgrade will support jobs, economic growth, and help unlock the vast renewable potential of the Western Isles.”

Stornoway Port Chief Executive Alex Macleod said the project would serve as a cornerstone for future island prosperity.

“This strengthens the Port’s position as a driving force for economic growth in the islands while delivering the infrastructure that enables industry to expand, attract investment, and create high-quality employment throughout the Isle of Lewis,” he said.

From deep water docks to wind turbines, Arnish is fast becoming the beating heart of Scotland’s renewable revolution.
