Aviemore Woman Sets Off on 340-Mile Charity Walk for Poppyscotland

As autumn settles over the Highlands, one woman from Aviemore is setting out on a journey that will stretch from the very top of Scotland to the southern border, all in support of Poppyscotland.

Wendy Sylvester will begin her five-week challenge at Cape Wrath lighthouse in late October and aims to reach the Scottish Border on 29 November, walking more than 340 miles in total.

The route will take her through some of the country’s most iconic and remote landscapes, including the Great Glen Way, the West Highland Way, and communities across Sutherland, the Highlands, the Central Belt and the Borders.

It’s not the first time Wendy has walked for Poppyscotland.

In 2021, she raised over £5,000 for the charity by trekking from Dunnottar Castle to Eilean Donan Castle.

This year’s route, which she’s calling North to South for Poppyscotland was inspired by friends joking that she might as well walk the full length of the country.

Wendy says the timing of her walk is no coincidence.

“People often ask why I’d want to do such a long walk when the days are shorter and the weather’s turning,” she said.

“But Poppyscotland is an all-year charity, and the closer we get to Remembrance Day, the more people connect with its message.”

Her motivation is deeply personal.

“My grandfather fought at Ypres, my dad was in the Royal Navy, and my partner is former Black Watch,” she said.

“I served for five years with 7 Scots as a Combat Medic.

“This is about giving back to a community I’m proud to be part of.”

Every penny raised will go directly to Poppyscotland, supporting employment, housing, mental health, and financial support services for veterans, serving personnel, and their families.

Wendy is self-funding the challenge and will rely on support from local businesses, well-wishers, and friends joining her along parts of the route.

She’s already received strong backing from the Aviemore community, and says she’s grateful for the encouragement and generosity shown so far.

Robin Phillips, Regional Fundraiser at Poppyscotland, praised Wendy’s determination.

“Wendy’s ‘North to South’ challenge is a remarkable example of the dedication individuals show to our cause,” he said.

“To undertake such a journey at this time of year takes incredible commitment and personal strength.

“Her support helps us make a lasting difference in the lives of Scotland’s Armed Forces community.”

Wendy’s walk will pass through places including Durness, Tongue, Lairg, Bonar Bridge, Inverness, Glasgow, Moffat, Gretna Green, and on to the Border, a path that weaves together Scotland’s landscapes and its stories.
