More than 350,000 Baby Boxes have now been delivered to families across Scotland, marking a major milestone for one of the country’s most distinctive universal public services.
The landmark was reached in 2025, eight years after the scheme was introduced to give every newborn an equal start in life, regardless of background or income.
Since launching in 2017, the Baby Box has become a widely recognised symbol of Scotland’s commitment to early years support, equality, and practical help for new parents.
Each box contains essential items for the first months of a child’s life, including clothing, bedding, books, and safety equipment, and is designed to double as a safe sleeping space.
As the year draws to a close, the SNP has highlighted the milestone as evidence of a policy delivering real world impact for families at a critical moment of change and adjustment.
The scheme is offered universally, removing stigma while helping to reduce financial pressure on households during the early stages of parenthood.
Clare Haughey said the milestone was a moment of national pride.
“Reaching more than 350,000 Baby Boxes is a moment of pride for Scotland.
“This programme demonstrates the SNP’s belief that every child, no matter their background, deserves an equal start.
“Families tell us time and again how much the Baby Box means to them, both practically and emotionally.
“It represents care, dignity, and a commitment to supporting parents from day one.”
She said the scheme has become a valued part of early parenthood across the country.
“Baby Boxes have become a cherished part of the early days of parenthood in Scotland.
“They reduce financial pressure, promote safe sleeping, and help parents feel prepared and supported.
“This year’s milestone shows the lasting value of this universal service and symbolises the SNP’s commitment to giving every Scot the best possible start in life.”
The Baby Box has been cited internationally as an example of progressive early years policy, with Scotland’s model studied by governments and organisations around the world.
For many families, the arrival of the box has become a defining moment, offering reassurance, practical help, and a tangible sign of support at the very start of a child’s life.
