Back to The Future – Academy Street Returns to Pre-Covid Setup

In a move to restore Inverness’s Academy Street to its pre-pandemic flow, The Highland Council has enlisted contractor Markon to carry out a major road marking and bollard removal project beginning Monday, 4 November 2024.

The works, expected to span four to five days, will remove nearly all temporary bollards installed during Covid-19, re-establishing the street’s original layout and easing vehicle flow along this vital route through the city centre.

Only bollards outside the Taxi Rank near the Union Street junction will remain as a safety measure to deter risky U-turns, ensuring safer navigation for both drivers and pedestrians in the area.

While The Highland Council has scheduled most work for daylight hours, with some additional activity during the evening and overnight, commuters and local drivers should allow extra travel time as minor disruptions may occur.

Public transport services will see minimal impact, so bus schedules should remain largely unaffected, providing a smoother ride for regular commuters despite the temporary traffic management setup.

Weather permitting, the transformation should be complete by the weekend, returning Academy Street to its former ease of access and familiar layout, a small but significant step back toward normalcy in the heart of Inverness.
