A family-run business in the Outer Hebrides has been recognised for going above and beyond when it comes to food hygiene and safety.
Beckett and Sons has been presented with the prestigious Eat Safe Award from Food Standards Scotland, marking the business out as one of the best in the islands for meeting the highest standards in food preparation and safety management.
The award, which was handed over by Cllr Dr Frances Murray, Chair of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Community Safety Board, is only given to food businesses that exceed the legal requirements for hygiene, making it a recognised mark of excellence for customers.
Cllr Murray praised the business for its achievement, saying:
“The Eat Safe award is only presented to businesses that have achieved hygiene standards beyond those required by law, so their commitment has to be commended.”
She encouraged other food outlets in the Outer Hebrides to aim for the award, adding:
“It provides them with a valuable tool to reassure their customers of a continuing commitment to food safety.”
The Eat Safe scheme is run by the Environmental Health Service of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar in partnership with Food Standards Scotland and is open to all establishments selling food directly to consumers.
Eligible businesses are assessed for the award during scheduled food hygiene inspections by Environmental Health officers, with only those achieving consistently high results being considered.
By setting the bar higher than the law demands, the scheme offers an incentive for businesses to go the extra mile while helping consumers make confident, informed choices about where to eat.
For Christopher Mclachlan, owner of Beckett and Sons, and his team, the award is not just a plaque for the wall but a public recognition of the care and attention that goes into every aspect of their work.
In a region where reputation and word of mouth matter, the Eat Safe Award is more than a badge of honour, it’s a sign to customers that they can trust what’s on their plate.
Eligible establishments are assessed for the award as part of scheduled food hygiene inspections undertaken by officers from Environmental Health.
