A national water safety campaign has been launched urging recreational boaters to prepare properly before heading out onto the water this season.
HM Coastguard, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the Royal Yachting Association are working together to deliver the annual initiative aimed at improving boating safety across the United Kingdom.
The campaign carries the message “Reduce the risk, boost your skills” and encourages both new and experienced boaters to review their safety procedures before setting out.
Organisers say simple preparation can significantly reduce the risk of incidents while helping crews respond effectively if problems arise.
The campaign provides a free set of boating safety checklists designed to help boat owners prepare their vessels, equipment and crews before the start of the season.
The laminated guidance booklets include practical advice on key safety steps including planning passages, discussing man overboard procedures and checking engines and onboard equipment.
Boaters are also encouraged to ensure there is a clear second in command onboard and that a reliable way of calling for help is always available.
Tom Barnett, Network Commander for HM Coastguard, said preparation is one of the most important parts of boating safely.
“As a boater myself, I recognise the importance of effective preparation and planning.
“It’s absolutely part of how boaters best equip themselves and others for a safe and enjoyable day out on the water.
“Created in collaboration with partners at the RNLI and RYA, our campaign provides tips, advice and a helpful set of free Boating Checklists, designed to help boaters carefully consider their safety, the safety of their passengers, and the safety of their vessel and its features.”
He added that anyone experiencing difficulty at sea should contact emergency services immediately.
“If you do get into trouble on the coast or at sea, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
The RNLI said preparation and awareness remain key to preventing incidents at sea.
Sarah Pennicard, RNLI Water Safety Delivery Manager, said:
“We always want people to enjoy being on the coast, but things can quickly go wrong at sea.
“It’s so important to stay prepared.
“The boating checklists are your essential guide to ensure you are prepared as we enter the start of the boating season, and we’re thrilled to be working with HM Coastguard and the RYA to produce them.
“By keeping the essential checklists onboard, you’ll be reducing the risks of incidents occurring or increasing in severity.”
The Royal Yachting Association said the start of the boating season is also a good opportunity for sailors to refresh their knowledge and training.
Richard Falk, Director of Training at the RYA, said:
“There’s nothing quite like time spent out on the water.
“But whatever your level of experience, even the shortest trip benefits from a little thought and preparation.
“We’re delighted to be working alongside the RNLI and HM Coastguard to share these important safety messages as the boating season gets underway.”
He added that many boaters choose to update their knowledge through training courses or safety guides ahead of the new season.
