Archaeological discoveries from across the Highlands will take centre stage in Inverness this weekend.
The 2025 Highland Archaeology Festival runs on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 September at the Highland Council Chamber on Glenurquhart Road.
Among the highlights is a talk on the remarkable Bronze Age hoard unearthed at Rosemarkie.
The hoard, described by experts as “the most complete and complicated” of its kind found in Scotland, was buried nearly 3,000 years ago and discovered during building work on the Black Isle.
The discovery includes carefully packed items buried for safekeeping, alongside remains of Bronze Age dwellings.
Its inclusion in the programme has drawn national interest.
The festival will also explore recent digs at Iron Age towers and Pictish strongholds, medieval finds in Inverness, and even the presence of Norwegian forces in the Highlands during the Second World War.
Talks, displays, and networking opportunities will be available throughout the weekend.
A wide range of groups will be in attendance, including local history societies, universities, museums, and commercial archaeologists.
Stalls and exhibits will be open to the public, giving attendees a chance to engage directly with ongoing research and discoveries.
Councillor Ken Gowans, Chair of The Highland Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee, encouraged the public to attend.
“Our 2025 Highland Archaeology Conference will highlight recent work on the archaeology and heritage of the Highlands,” he said.
“It’s about coming together to share the unique and special heritage of the region.”
“Tickets are still available, so I urge anyone interested to book their place for one day or both,” he added.
“Everyone will be made to feel very welcome.”
The full programme includes sessions on post-excavation analysis in medieval Inverness and caring for the city’s historic buildings.
