Call for Fusion Future at Dounreay Gains Momentum

Jamie Stone has urged the UK Government to support plans to bring fusion energy development to Dounreay in Caithness, highlighting the site’s potential as a centre for future energy research.

The MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross raised the issue in the House of Commons, calling on ministers to help establish Dounreay as a hub for fusion energy.

Fusion energy, which involves combining atomic nuclei to release large amounts of energy, is widely seen as a potential long term source of clean and reliable power.

It is considered an alternative to current nuclear fission methods, offering the promise of higher efficiency with lower environmental impact.

Mr Stone pointed to Dounreay’s existing infrastructure and workforce as key strengths in developing future energy technologies.

The site has a long history in nuclear research and is home to a skilled workforce with experience in complex energy systems.

In response, the Minister for Industry said Dounreay’s expertise could play a role in the UK’s future nuclear programme.

Jamie Stone MP said:

“Dounreay’s legacy has created the infrastructure and expertise needed for advanced work and this must include contributions to fusion-related science.

“I’ve said relentlessly that we have a skilled workforce and a local population that is supportive of the work at Dounreay.

“It is also an excellent high-quality local employer.

“I want to see the UK Government assist us in reaching its potential for the benefit of the energy security of the whole of the UK.

“We know for certain that the SNP Government in Holyrood won’t be of any help.”

The call comes as interest grows in developing new energy technologies to support long term energy security and reduce reliance on traditional fuels.

Supporters argue that sites like Dounreay could play a key role in that transition, combining existing expertise with future innovation.

Jamie Stone has called for government support to bring fusion energy development to Dounreay, highlighting its workforce and infrastructure as key to the UK’s future energy ambitions.
