The newly elected MP for Moray West, Nairn and Strathspey, Graham Leadbitter, has said his office has opened 1,000 pieces of casework on behalf of constituents since his election in July, showing local people are worried about the broken promises and ‘callous’ decisions being made by the UK Labour government.
Having closed 940 of those cases to date, Mr Leadbitter said he has also received a total of 1,628 emails from constituents, and has sent 1,328.
Last month alone, the constituency office opened 427 cases, with 28% of those being on social security and pensions following the Labour UK government’s decision to end the Winter Fuel Payment for nearly 20,000 local people.
Commenting, Graham Leadbitter MP said:
“It’s clear from my inbox every morning that the Labour party is failing in its duty to help ordinary people.
“1,000 cases in just 90 days is extraordinary, but hardly surprising given the broken promises and callous decisions of Starmer’s Labour government.
“Heading into what will be another freezing winter in the North of Scotland, they decided to remove the Winter Fuel Payment for nearly 20,000 local people, and have overseen a drastic 10% rise in energy prices for homes on the grid.
“A huge number of the enquiries I’ve received are from older people who are terrified about how they are going to pay for their energy, with many genuinely telling me they’ll need to choose between whether to heat or eat.
“My team and I are on-hand to assist constituents with their concerns, and when Parliament returns next week I’ll be standing up for those people who are already feeling the cold and the pinch because of the decisions made by Labour, as well as encouraging Starmer to finally step up and get rid of the austerity policies they’ve continued from the Tories.
“When I was elected I promised to be a representative for everyone in Moray West, Nairn and Strathspey, regardless of whether or not they voted for me.
“That’s a promise I’m keeping.”
