Warm congratulations have been shared across the Western Isles as Joan Macleod celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends in Bremner Court, Stornoway.

On Tuesday 28 October, Cllr Kenny Macleod, Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, visited Joan to present her with a gift on behalf of the communities of the Western Isles, marking a century of life filled with love, dedication, and family.

Joan was born in Sheshader, Point, on 28 October 1925. During World War II she worked as a nurse, dedicating her time to helping others, before later taking up work at Newall’s Mill.

In 1947 she married Gordon Macleod, and together they built their life in Stornoway, raising three children, two sons and a daughter.

The family were among the first residents of Kennedy Terrace, where Joan remained in her own home until last year.

Her remarkable milestone was made even more special with the presence of most of her six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, who gathered to celebrate the day with her.

Cllr Macleod said it was an honour to mark such an extraordinary occasion, describing Joan as “a cherished member of her community and a wonderful example of strength, kindness, and family spirit.”

Happy 100th Birthday, Joan from everyone across the Highlands and Islands.
