Families across the Highlands who are worried about paying bills or keeping their children warm during the current cold snap are being urged to contact the Children First support line for help.

The appeal comes as temperatures drop sharply across Scotland, with the national children’s charity warning it is hearing daily from parents and carers who are struggling to make ends meet and provide basic essentials.

Children First says demand for its support line has surged, with the number of callers rising by almost 50 percent towards the end of 2025.

The service offers practical, emotional and financial support to families across Scotland, operating 365 days a year.

Support includes benefit checks, budgeting advice and help accessing emergency assistance to ensure families can stay warm and well during winter.

Simon McGowan said the charity wants families to know help is available.

“We want every parent and carer in Scotland to know they are not alone if they are worried about paying bills or keeping their children warm.

“Our friendly support line team is here to listen and provide expert advice to ensure families get the support they need.

“We understand how hard it can be trying to make ends meet and the pressure families are under.”

In 2024, the Children First support line helped families secure close to £2.5 million in financial gains and supported people to manage around £500,000 of debt.

The charity says early intervention can make a critical difference, particularly for families caring for young children or relatives.

One kinship carer, Tony, who is raising his two year old granddaughter Cara, said the support he received was life changing.

“It was only when Children First support line got involved that things started to get better.

“I feel like a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders, it’s such a relief.”

Parents and carers in the Highlands can contact the Children First support line by phone or online.

The freephone number is 08000 28 22 33, with webchat available through the Children First website.

Parents and carers can contact the support line via webchat at www.childrenfirst.org.uk/supportline or call free on 08000 28 22 33.

The service is available Monday to Friday from 9am to 9pm, and at weekends from 9am to 12 noon.

Children First is encouraging families not to wait until they reach crisis point, stressing that confidential support is available and that asking for help is a positive step.
