Christine Gillies has been elected to Highland Council after a spirited by-election in Eilean a’ Cheò, bringing an independent voice to the heart of local politics.

It was a day of quiet determination and island pride, as voters turned out to make their mark on Thursday 19 June.

By the time the count wrapped up at Kyleakin Community Hall the next morning, streamed live for all to see, Christine had edged ahead at stage eight of the electronic vote.

The result brought cheers, relief and a sense of renewed purpose for a community that cares deeply about its future.

With 40.1 percent of the electorate casting their ballots, the turnout was a clear sign that islanders remain firmly engaged in shaping their own destiny.

Christine, standing as an independent, was one of eight candidates competing to fill the seat.

Her win now sees her join Councillors John Finlayson, Drew Millar and Ruraidh Stewart in representing Ward 10 on The Highland Council.

Together, this group now carries a broad range of political experience, but Christine’s independent stance stands out as a reminder that party lines do not always reflect local priorities.

Those who backed her spoke of her grounded approach, her deep roots in the community and her genuine desire to listen.

Throughout her campaign, she focused on practical concerns from affordable housing and better transport links to preserving the character and culture of the islands.

She has promised to be a voice for everyone in Eilean a’ Cheò, not just those who voted for her.

The count itself was calm but quietly emotional, as neighbours and friends gathered to watch the results unfold together.

There was a strong sense that this was democracy at its most personal, close to home and close to the heart.

In her first words as a newly elected councillor, Christine thanked voters for placing their trust in her and promised to get to work straight away.

She has pledged to keep communication open and honest and to represent all corners of the ward with fairness and care.

This by-election result is more than just a win on paper.

It reflects a shared belief that local voices matter and that with the right person in place, real change is possible.

Congratulations to Councillor Christine Gillies.

The people of Eilean a’ Cheò have chosen someone who knows them, respects them and is ready to serve.
