Coast Clever Campaign Launched to Keep Beachgoers Safe This Summer

As record-breaking sunshine draws thousands to the coast, HM Coastguard is urging everyone to stay safe and “coast clever” this summer.

With temperatures soaring and beaches filling fast, the Coastguard has launched a national safety campaign to help prevent avoidable accidents along the UK’s stunning but sometimes unpredictable shorelines.

The Coast Clever campaign highlights key coastal hazards including cliff falls, tidal cut-offs, offshore winds and mud.

It comes as the Met Office predicts an unusually hot summer following the driest spring in over a century with heatwaves now twice as likely in the months ahead.

Behind the sunny forecasts, however, lies a serious warning.

According to official figures, more drownings happen in July than in any other month.

Most victims are men aged 20 to 29.

Last year alone, the Coastguard responded to more than 600 tidal cut-off incidents, a stark reminder of how quickly the sea can catch people off guard.

Chief Coastguard Pat O’Callaghan said the campaign is designed to make a real difference.

“Every summer, we respond to people in danger at the coast,” he said.

“Many of these emergencies could be avoided with a little knowledge and preparation.”

“We want the public to enjoy our incredible coastline, but we also want them to understand the risks.”

Simple steps can save lives.

These include checking the weather and tide times, steering clear of cliff edges and bases, and avoiding water sports when offshore winds are blowing, especially when the wind is coming from the land out to sea.

Visitors are also advised to tell someone where they’re going and when they expect to return.

Carrying a fully charged mobile phone, or even a personal locator beacon for remote areas, is also strongly recommended.

“If you get into trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard,” said Mr O’Callaghan.

“And if you see someone else in trouble, don’t hesitate, call for help straight away.”

The campaign is supported by posters, real-life case studies and clear safety messaging in coastal areas across the country.

As temperatures rise and beaches buzz with life, the Coastguard hopes its message will cut through the noise.

Be aware.

Be prepared.

And coast clever.
