Cold and Unsettled Weather Continues Across Highlands and Islands

Unsettled weather is set to continue across the Highlands and Islands through the weekend, with heavy rain, strong winds and snow expected over higher ground.

According to the Met Office, eastern parts of the Highlands are likely to see persistent rain through Friday and into Saturday following several days of already wet conditions.

Further rainfall totals of 20mm to 30mm are expected widely, with some higher totals possible locally, increasing the risk of surface water issues in vulnerable areas.

As colder air moves in from the east, much of the precipitation above 400 to 500 metres is expected to fall as snow, particularly across higher routes and mountain areas.

Strong southeasterly winds are also forecast along North Sea coasts, bringing blustery conditions to exposed communities and transport routes.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings covering parts of northern and eastern Scotland, urging residents and travellers to remain alert as conditions evolve.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Andy Page said the mix of rain, snow and wind would continue to affect northern areas.

“Unsettled weather continues with persistent and heavy rain in parts of Scotland, snow over higher ground and strong winds in exposed areas."

While conditions are expected to ease gradually into Saturday night, the overall pattern remains changeable as the weekend draws to a close.

Looking ahead to Monday, a quieter start is expected for many parts of the Highlands, with patchy fog possible early in the day.

Later on Monday, a new weather front is forecast to push in from the west, bringing rain to western parts of the Highlands and the Hebrides.

As this system meets colder air across northern Scotland, further snowfall is possible over higher ground, including the Cairngorms and other mountain ranges.

Further into next week, forecasters say conditions are likely to remain unsettled, with colder air occasionally filtering in from the east while Atlantic systems continue to bring wind and rain from the west.

The Met Office is advising people across the Highlands and Islands to keep up to date with local forecasts and any further weather warnings that may be issued.
