Members of the Skye and Raasay Area Committee agreed on (Monday 30 January 2023) a list of prioritised structural overlay/inlay works and surface dressing schemes which will be funded out of the Capital Budget allocation for 2023/24.

The actual 2023/24 capital roads budget allocation for Skye and Raasay is still to be finalised but based on the previous financial year and analysis of road condition survey results it is expected to be similar to 2022/23.

This would give a capital budget allocation for the Skye and Raasay area of £490,401 in total, consisting of £303,348 for overlay/inlay works and £187,054 towards surface dressing schemes.

Skye and Raasay Area Committee Chair, Cllr John Finlayson said:

“It has been well reported that the roads network across Skye and Raasay are currently in poor condition, making driving conditions for both residents and visitors challenging.

“Road use for approximately seven months of the year from April-October is significantly greater as we welcome approximately 600,000 tourists annually to the area, however the road infrastructure currently doesn’t meet the needs of the users and requires a targeted programme and improved funding to enable sustained repairs and improvements to the road network.

“While members have agreed the programme for 2023/24, it is hoped that additional funding will be identified as the year goes on to further improve the condition of our roads on Skye & Raasay.”

Works for the Skye and Raasay area are identified based on a prioritised ranking.

The ranking is informed by:

  • Scottish Road Maintenance Condition Survey (SRMCS) data;
  • safety inspections;
  • service inspections; and
  • input and feedback from Ward Members

Members endorsed the priorities presented to Area Committee, with some of the following proposals:

  • A850 Borve – Dunvegan Road (Braebost) – Resurfacing
  • A855 Portree – Staffin Road (Ice alert & Shed bends) – Resurfacing
  • A863 Sligachan – Dunvegan Road (Gearymore) – Surface Dressing
  • A851 Broadford – Armadale Road (A87(T) junction – Double Grid) – Surface Dressing

The list of prioritised projects approved along with the report presented to the committee is available here (Item 5).
