Concern Over Moray Council Racism Allegations

Moray’s SNP Council Group has expressed concern over racism allegations made by Independent Buckie Councillor Neil McLennan against other unnamed councillors.

The racism claims have been published in a Press & Journal article here: https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/moray/5353252/racism-moray-council-neil-mclennan/

The allegations were made by Cllr McLennan following his resignation as Moray Council’s appointed Trustee on the Dick Bequest Trust, the funds of which have been linked to the slave trade.

Backing a motion proposed by Elgin North SNP Councillor Jérémie Fernandes and seconded by Buckie SNP Councillor John Stuart.

The Council supported the resignation and took the decision to ‘sever ties with the trust’ and not re-appoint anyone to the Trust’s Board.

Commenting on the emerging racism allegations Cllr Fernandes said:

“We are deeply concerned on learning about these accusations, especially on the same day that Moray Council debated the issue of links with a trust fund built on the profits of slavery and unanimously agreed to sever ties with it.

“Clearly any such allegations must be properly investigated and any evidence produced.

“The Notice of motion brought by myself and Cllr Stuart intended to distance Moray council from profits related to the slave trade, it is therefore concerning that this positive intent has regrettably been overshadowed by accusations of racist comments made by someone on the council.

“The investigation of these allegations should now follow due process to ensure public confidence.”
