Council Urges Landowners to Inspect Wind‑Damaged Trees After Storm Floris

Highland Council is asking landowners to check their land for any damage after Storm Floris brought fierce winds to the region.

Branches weakened by the storm could still pose a danger to roads and pavements.

Checking trees near public routes now will help prevent further risk to drivers and pedestrians in the coming days.

The Council is also encouraging landowners to check that drainage from their property is clear and not overflowing onto public roads.

Blocked drains and flooding can add to the hazards left behind by high winds.

Teams have been working across the Highlands to clear fallen trees from Council land.

However, with widespread damage reported, private landowners are being reminded to play their part in keeping routes safe.

Tracey Urry, Head of Roads and Infrastructure, said safety remains the priority.

“Damaged trees and blocked drains can create real dangers on our roads,” she said.

“Our teams are working incredibly hard, but there are times we need to pause work if it’s not safe.

“Landowners can make a huge difference by checking their own trees and drainage.”

Under Section 91 of the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984, the Council can require landowners to remove hazardous vegetation, and in extreme cases will take action itself and recover costs.

Anyone who spots dangerous trees on Council land is asked to email Tree.Enquiries@highland.gov.uk with details and, if possible, a photo and exact location.

Advice is available by calling the Service Centre on 01349 886601 during office hours or 01349 886690 out of hours.
