People are urged to be aware of counterfeit bank notes circulating in the Inverness area.

Reports have been made of £50 and £20 notes have been tendered at businesses in the city and another in Beauly in the last week which were subsequently found to be fake.

Commenting Inspector Jane Mackenzie said:

“We are urging members of the public, particularly retail workers who deal with cash sales, to check bank notes carefully before completing a transaction.

“Counterfeit notes often do look plausible at first glance so it is important that you check any notes you receive thoroughly.

“Anyone who deliberately uses counterfeit currency is committing a crime and we will thoroughly investigate all instances reported to us.”
