Young minds in Dalneigh are transforming play for their community with an exciting new addition to Hawthorn Drive play park.

Members of Dalneigh Youth Club have taken the lead on designing an extension to the park, putting teenagers at the heart of the project.

This youth-led initiative has been brought to life through a collaboration between The Highland Council and Dalneigh and Columba Community Council.

The result will be a dynamic new area designed specifically for teenagers, with installation due in summer 2025.

Workshops run by Youth Leader Shannon Kelly and Highland Council staff gave young people the chance to voice their ideas and shape the space.

The final design includes a climbing frame with monkey bars and nets, a hammock for lounging, and a thrilling zipline.

Dalneigh Playpark Association has also played a key role in supporting the plans.

Cllr Graham MacKenzie praised the work, highlighting the importance of listening to young voices when building community assets.

He said play is vital for physical health, mental wellbeing and the development of children of all ages.

Ward 14 members from Inverness Central commended the dedication and creativity shown by the youth club and community groups.

Barry Kane, Chair of Dalneigh and Columba Community Council, said he was proud of the partnership work and the thoughtful input from local youth.

He called the new development an “excellent and well-used facility in the making” and thanked everyone who helped move it forward.

Dalneigh Youth Club Leader Shannon Kelly said young people were keen to shape a space that felt truly theirs.

She said many play parks often overlook the needs of teenagers, but this project gives them a chance to reclaim the joy of play.

One youth club member said being asked for their opinion made them feel heard and valued.

They said they were excited to see the climbing frame installed and loved having real choices in the process.

Dalneigh Youth Club runs every Wednesday evening in the James Cameron Community Centre.

It is free to attend and open to young people in the Inverness High School catchment area.

The club runs from 6-7pm for P6 to S2 and from 7.15-8.45pm for S3 and above.

This project shows what’s possible when young people are given the tools, trust and support to shape their own communities.
