Dounreay Fire, Ambulance and Rescue personnel are aiming to raise funds in aid of Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland and The Firefighter Charity by carrying out a sponsored stretcher carry from Dounreay to Caithness General Hospital.

The event, which will take place on Friday 28th April, will see the team of emergency service personnel carry the stretcher along with a ‘casualty’ weighing 60kg – the equivalent of an average adult’s weight, along the 30-mile route.

The stretcher will be carried by four firefighters at a time with between 15 and 20 firefighters making up the total team, who will be carrying donation buckets to collect donations from well-wishers along the route.

The challenge will begin at 0800hrs leaving the Dounreay site, passing through Thurso and Watten before crossing the finish line at Caithness General Hospital, Wick.

Craig Anderson from Wick is a firefighter and Ambulance Technician at Dounreay Fire and Rescue Service.

Speaking ahead of the event he said:

“We chose to fundraise for Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland and the Firefighters Charity because we believe these are both worthy charities and that the money raised for these charities would benefit our local community.

“Myself and my colleagues are very much looking forward to the challenge and hope to raise as much money as we can for both these fantastic charities.”

Emma Mitchell, Community Fundraiser at Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland said:

“We are incredibly grateful to Craig and his team for choosing Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland as one of the two charities to benefit from their fantastic fundraising stretcher carry.

“All of the funds raised for CHSS stay in Scotland allowing us to support the 1 in 5 people across the country living with chest, heart and stroke conditions to live their lives to the full.”
