Johanna Morrison’s 100th Birthday

Cllr Kenny Macleod, Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar visited Johanna Morrison on the occasion of her 100th birthday and presented her with a gift on behalf of the communities of the Western Isles.

Cllr Macleod noted that Johanna is the 16th individual to celebrate their 100th birthday in the Western Isles since he was elected Convener in May 2022.

Johanna was born on 19 July 1924 at 8 Portvoller, Point to John and Mary Macrae.

The youngest of 6 siblings, she attended Aird school before leaving at the outbreak of war.

Johanna stayed at home and looked after her parents, her father passed away in 1952.

Johanna met her husband, William Morrison on a May holiday outing to Ness. 

They married in 1955 and built a house in Holm that they moved into along with Johanna’s mother, who she looked after until her death 10 years later.

Her husband William passed away in 1985.

Johanna worked in the Co-op drapery shop on Cromwell St, Stornoway.

Initially she had applied for the job as an assistant to cover a maternity leave for 2 months but ended up working there for 22 years until she retired in 1990.

She enjoyed her years there and they were a good company to work for.

Johanna’s pastimes were gardening and walking.

She took a daily walk around the Castle grounds in all weather’s.

She would also travel to America annually for 7 weeks to visit family, her brother Donald had moved over there in 1953. 

She has many nieces and nephews who she is very thankful for, all of whom help her out in different ways.
