Drivers Reminded of Stornoway Pedestrian Zone Restrictions Ahead of Christmas

Drivers are being reminded of the long standing traffic restrictions in the pedestrian area of Stornoway town centre as the Christmas period approaches.

The reminder comes as footfall increases and more people use the central streets for shopping, socialising and festive events.

The pedestrian zone covers Cromwell Street, Point Street, Bank Street and Francis Street where access is strictly limited to authorised permit holders and emergency services.

The rules apply every day between 10.30am and 6pm when no vehicles should enter the zone unless permitted.

Drivers with authorised permits are being urged to stick to their allocated times to help keep the area safe during the busiest weeks of the year.

Councillor Iain Macaulay, Chair of the Town Centre Subcommittee, said:

“We are now coming up to a busy time of the year where pedestrians will be using this area more regularly and it is imperative that only authorised vehicles are entering this zone to ensure everyone’s safety.

“I would like to remind the public that there is a £200 fine for anybody caught driving through the precinct within the hours of 10.30am and 6pm unless holding a permit.”

The pedestrian zone was introduced to create a safer and more welcoming environment in the heart of Stornoway, and the increase in winter visitors makes compliance even more important.

The local authority is encouraging drivers to plan their routes ahead of time and make use of nearby car parks to avoid entering the restricted area.

The map provided highlights the streets affected and offers a clear guide for anyone unfamiliar with the layout of the town centre.

This reminder matters because busy festive streets rely on safe walking routes, and the pedestrian zone helps protect shoppers, families and visitors enjoying Stornoway at its brightest.
