A Stornoway food business has been recognised for achieving exceptional food hygiene standards after Engebret Ltd received a Food Standards Scotland Eat Safe Award on 22 December 2025.

The award was presented by Frances Murray, Chair of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Community Safety Board, to owners Johannes and Julie Engebretsen and their staff.

The Eat Safe Award is delivered locally by the Environmental Health Service of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar in partnership with Food Standards Scotland.

The scheme is open to food businesses that sell directly to consumers and is designed to recognise standards that go beyond the legal minimum for food hygiene and safety management.

It also helps customers make informed choices by offering a clear and recognisable sign of excellence when choosing where to eat.

Cllr Frances Murray said she was delighted to present the award to the Engebret Ltd team in Stornoway.

“The Eat Safe award is only presented to businesses that have achieved hygiene standards beyond those required by law, so their commitment has to be commended.

“I would encourage all businesses within the Outer Hebrides to aim for this award as it provides them with a valuable tool to reassure their customers of a continuing commitment to produce food safely.”

Businesses are assessed for the Eat Safe Award during routine food hygiene inspections carried out by Environmental Health officers.

Only those that consistently demonstrate high standards across food handling, cleanliness, and safety management are eligible to receive the award.

The recognition highlights Engebret Ltd’s ongoing commitment to food safety and reinforces confidence among customers across the local community.

Further information about the Eat Safe scheme is available through Food Standards Scotland.
