Exceptional Storm Floris Brings Amber Wind Warning to Scotland Today

Scotland is bracing for potentially exceptional weather as Storm Floris sweeps in today, with the Met Office warning of damaging winds and travel disruption across much of the country.

An amber warning for wind is in force from 10am to 10pm today, Monday 4 August, covering a large part of mainland Scotland and the Western Isles.

A broader yellow warning also applies to most of the country for the same period.

Forecasters warn of inland gusts reaching 70mph and coastal gusts around 80mph, with the possibility of even stronger winds in exposed locations.

Rail and ferry services are expected to face delays, cancellations and speed restrictions.

Roads and bridges, especially those used by high‑sided vehicles are also likely to be affected.

Homeowners are being urged to secure outdoor furniture and other loose items.

Matthew Lehnert, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said conditions are more reminiscent of winter than summer.

“Across the warning area, many inland areas are likely to see gusts of 40‑50mph, with 60‑70mph more likely at higher elevations and around exposed coasts in Scotland,” he said.

“There is a small chance that some locations here could even record gusts of 85mph.”

Heavy rain will also accompany the storm, with a risk of localised flooding, though the rain is expected to clear quickly as the system moves east later tonight.

The unusual timing of the storm has prompted extra preparations, with the Scottish Government’s resilience team meeting key partners on Friday to coordinate the response.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop urged travellers to plan ahead and allow extra time.

“Given the unusual timing, and the fact some people will be on holiday, travelling or perhaps unaware, we are trying to raise even more awareness than usual of this potentially disruptive storm,” she said.

“Please check with operators as we do expect rail, ferries, roads and bridges to be disrupted on Monday across the country.”

Traffic Scotland, Police Scotland, SEPA and local authorities will issue real‑time updates throughout the day as the storm progresses.
