The Crofting Commission has issued a final reminder to crofters across Scotland to submit their Annual Notice before the deadline on 6 April, 2026.
The notice is a legal requirement and must be completed each year to confirm crofters are meeting their statutory duties.
This includes confirming residency on or near the croft and demonstrating that the land is being actively used or maintained.
The Commission has stressed that while future changes to crofting law are expected, this year’s return must still be completed in full and on time.
Those who have not yet submitted their notice are being urged to act immediately as the deadline approaches.
Failure to do so is considered a breach of duty and may result in formal action being taken.
Iain Maciver said:
“The Annual Notice is not optional; it is a legal obligation for every person holding a croft.
“We use this data to ensure that crofting law is being followed and that the Crofting Register is accurate.
“To date, many have already complied, but for those who have not, the window is closing.
“The Commission will be taking formal action against those who fail to return their notice by the 6 April deadline.”
Crofters can submit their Annual Notice online through the Crofting Commission website, with most applications taking only a few minutes to complete.
Alternatively, support is available by phone through the Commission’s dedicated helpline.
Following the deadline, the Commission will begin identifying those who have not responded, which could lead to investigations into breaches of duty.
Such cases can carry serious consequences, including implications for the tenancy or ownership of the croft.
The Commission is urging all crofters to complete their returns promptly to avoid enforcement action and ensure compliance with the law.
