Findochty Primary School will proudly represent the Grampian region at the Scottish Youth Poetry Slam 2025, a national celebration of young voices, creativity, and the power of the spoken word.
Pupils have spent September working with professional poets and performers to craft and rehearse their original poems, ahead of the final event at Perth Theatre on Wednesday 1 October.
The lively competition brings together schools from across Scotland from Helensburgh to Glasgow, giving pupils the chance to perform their own work on stage in front of a national audience.
Head Teacher Dawn Thomson said the experience has already made a lasting impact on her pupils.
“Our pupils have loved creating their own poems in class and working both on their own and together,” she said.
“It’s been amazing to see how much their confidence, communication, and performance skills have grown.
“They’re really excited to share their work at the Slam.”
Findochty’s young poets have been taking part in workshops led by Glasgow-based poet, comedian, and writer Viv Gee.
The sessions are designed to help children explore language, build confidence, and discover their own unique voice through poetry.
The event, run by the Scottish Youth Poetry Slam team, is focused on creativity, fun, and self-expression rather than strict competition.
It offers a space for pupils to connect with others, share their work, and celebrate what they have to say.
Moray Council’s chair of the Education, Children’s and Leisure Services Committee, Councillor Kathleen Robertson, praised the school’s achievement.
“We congratulate the pupils and staff at Findochty Primary on this fantastic achievement,” she said.
“Taking part in the Scottish Youth Poetry Slam is a wonderful opportunity to develop new skills and a love for language.
‘We wish them all the best of luck and look forward to seeing them shine on stage.”
The national event will also feature young performers from schools in Perth, Stirling, Helensburgh, and Glasgow highlighting the breadth of talent emerging from classrooms across the country.
With poems written, rehearsals under way, and excitement building, Findochty’s pupils are ready to step up and speak out, representing not just their school, but the entire Grampian region.
