A service was held in Martin’s Memorial Church on Saturday 4 May, to mark Firefighters Memorial Day, a national day dedicated to honouring firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The service honoured the bravery and sacrifices which firefighters of the Western Isles, both past and present, have made over the many years whilst serving their communities.
In attendance was Cllr Kenny Macleod, Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
Reflecting on the service, Cllr Macleod said:
“It is important to have days like Firefighters Memorial Day, so we do not forget, but remember, the courage and selflessness which our firefighters show not only on our islands, but around the world also.
“It is a time to reflect and express our gratitude to the hardworking firefighters of the Western Isles, many of whom work other jobs, but do not hesitate to drop everything at once when the call to action is heard, whether it be in the middle of a working day or in the middle of the night.
“On behalf of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, thank you.”
