A former SNP MSP is to stand for the ALBA Party in the Highlands and Islands at the next Scottish Parliament election.

Mike MacKenzie, who represented the Highlands and Islands as an SNP list MSP from 2011 to 2016, has been confirmed as one of ALBA’s regional list candidates for May’s vote.

He was also a list candidate for the SNP at the 2021 election.

His selection follows the announcement that former Na h Eileanan an Iar MP Angus Brendan MacNeil will lead ALBA’s Highlands and Islands list campaign.

Laura Hansler, who was behind the A9 petition lodged at the Scottish Parliament, is also standing, alongside former SNP councillor Allan Duffy.

The party says it is fielding what it describes as a strong and experienced team across the region, as it seeks to secure representation at Holyrood through the list system.

ALBA strategists believe the make-up of the Highlands and Islands list gives the party an opportunity to make gains in May, particularly among pro independence voters who may look to use their regional vote tactically.

Commenting on his selection, Mike MacKenzie said:

“I’m delighted to be just one of a number of strong candidates carrying the ALBA standard in the Highlands & Islands at this election.

“Our message in the Highlands and across Scotland is clear: independence supporters must use their regional list vote to help guarantee a pro-independence majority, lock out Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, and ensure progress on independence.

“ALBA is presenting a slate of candidates who have a range of experience, both in Parliament and in the real world.

“We hope to restore some much-needed competence to the Scottish Parliament’s opposition benches.”

The Highlands and Islands regional list will once again be closely watched, with competition expected across the political spectrum as parties seek to convert list votes into seats under Scotland’s proportional representation system.
