Police are appealing for information after a four figure sum of cash was stolen from the only Post Office on the Isle of Tiree, preventing the premises from reopening this week.

Police Scotland said a suspect entered the Post Office in Scarinish at around 12.35am on Sunday 2 August and returned at around 12.30am on Monday 3 August.

At some point during one of those visits, a four figure sum of cash was taken from the premises.

Officers investigating the theft are now trying to identify a man seen in connection with the incident and are asking anyone who noticed suspicious activity in Scarinish during the early hours of either morning to come forward.

The suspect is described as a white man of thin build who was wearing heavy gloves, a scarf and a face covering.

He was also wearing a heavy jacket with a distinctive patch on the back and was carrying a rucksack.

The consequences of the theft have extended beyond the loss of the money itself because the Scarinish premises provides the island’s only Post Office service.

Police said the theft has prevented the Post Office from reopening this week, creating further disruption for people across the Tiree community who rely upon it.

Sergeant Colin Oman said:

“This is the only Post Office on the island and the theft of such a large sum of money has prevented it from re-opening this week, which will have a detrimental impact on the local community.

“We’re looking to identify the man responsible and would appeal to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area in the early hours of Sunday or Monday morning, to please get in touch.”

Officers are continuing their enquiries and are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen something unusual around Scarinish at the relevant times.
