Moray Council has agreed car parking in its car parks in Elgin will be free on Saturdays to promote shops and facilities in the run up to Christmas.
The scheme is an extension of the council’s Christmas shopping car parking promotion called ‘Free After 3’.
Free After 3 offers free parking in St Giles car park in Elgin on weekdays after 3pm, between Monday 27 November 2023 – Friday 5 January.
The free Saturday parking in Moray Council’s Elgin car parks offer applies on Saturdays between 25 November and 23 December.
It is being funded by Elgin councillors with £11,000 from the Elgin Common Good Fund and £6,000 from the River Lossie Trust, which they also administer.
Moray Council leader Kathleen Robertson said:
“We’re pleased to be able to provide free parking in our council car parks for the next five Saturdays between now and December 23, and after 3pm weekdays at St Giles car park again this year.
“This is a great opportunity for us to showcase how much Elgin has to offer to Christmas shoppers and we hope this promotion recognises the disruption from Batchen Street Car Park being closed and from the remedial works at Poundland, which have been causing traffic to be diverted onto Batchen Street.”
Moray Council Chief Executive, Roddy Burns, said:
“We’re grateful to the Elgin councillors for choosing to use the discretionary funding to put this measure in place.
“It will allow us to promote our parking facilities and Elgin town centre’s range of shops and businesses.
“It also provides a gesture of goodwill to residents, recognising that there has been a reduction in available parking and preferred locations while Batchen Lane Multi-Storey has been undergoing repairs.
“The whole offer represents collaborative working across parties from the Elgin ward members.”
