Gordon Docherty has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a series of serious sexual offences committed in Orkney over a period spanning more than a decade.

Docherty, 37, was convicted of offences against two teenagers in 2006 and 2008, and against a woman in 2020.

The guilty verdict was returned at the High Court in Edinburgh on Tuesday 4 November 2025, with sentencing taking place at the High Court in Inverness on Wednesday 21 January 2026.

As part of the sentence, the court ordered that Docherty be placed on the Sex Offenders Register and imposed an indefinite non harassment order to protect the victims.

The offences came to light following investigations into both historic and more recent abuse, drawing together accounts from victims separated by years but connected by the harm they experienced.

Police said the courage shown by those who came forward was central to securing a conviction and ensuring the case was brought before the courts.

Detective Inspector Calum Reid said the outcome reflected the seriousness of the crimes and the impact they had on those affected.

“Docherty’s actions were reprehensible and he will now face the consequences of his actions.

“I want to thank the victims who assisted our investigation.

“Their support was vital in bringing him to justice.

“While nothing can change what they have experienced, I hope this outcome brings them a degree of closure.

“We remain committed to thoroughly investigating reports of sexual offending and ensuring those responsible are held to account.”

Police said cases involving sexual abuse can be deeply distressing and that it often takes time for people to feel able to speak out.

Officers stressed that reports will be taken seriously regardless of when offences occurred.

Support remains available for anyone who is experiencing or has experienced sexual abuse.

Those affected are encouraged to contact Police Scotland or seek specialist support from organisations including Rape Crisis Scotland and Women’s Aid.
