Wilderness Scotland, an Aviemore-based adventure tourism pioneer, has dramatically transformed its operational landscape through groundbreaking sustainability initiatives.

The company has achieved a remarkable 16 percent reduction in scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions, underpinned by a strategic £141,858 investment from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

Its innovative carbon labelling scheme enables travellers to make environmentally informed choices, measuring the carbon impact of every individual trip and the entire business ecosystem.

The ambitious decarbonisation strategy targets a 90 percent reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, with a concurrent 50 percent reduction in scope 3 emissions through strategic global greenhouse gas mitigation projects.

By replacing diesel minivans with electric and hybrid vehicles, Wilderness Scotland has already transitioned 25 percent of its fleet to cleaner energy options, complemented by six on-site electric charging points.

Seventeen e-bikes now support new tour experiences, attracting eco-conscious customers and providing low-carbon tourism alternatives that simultaneously boost revenue and environmental stewardship.

The company’s longstanding commitment to sustainability is evidenced by its Wilderness Conservation and Community Fund, multiple green tourism awards, and consistent Gold Award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme.

Lizi Blackwood from HIE’s Inner Moray Firth team highlighted the broader implications, noting these initiatives combat climate change while attracting environmentally minded tourists and creating regional economic opportunities.

Managing Director Stevie Christie emphasised the transformative nature of HIE’s support, which has accelerated the company’s decarbonisation plans and supported sustainable business growth.

With 55 permanent staff and a two-decade history of environmental leadership, Wilderness Scotland continues to set industry benchmarks for responsible, innovative adventure tourism.
