Young people across the Highlands are opening their SQA envelopes today and discovering the results of a year’s hard work.

Early data shows a picture of improvement and resilience, with gains seen at both National 5 and Higher levels across the region.

This year’s A–C pass rate for National 5 stands at 76.4%, compared with 75.6% last year.

Higher passes are also up, rising to 74.2% a 2.8% increase on 2024.

More pupils are now achieving five National 5 awards in S4, with 39.3% reaching that milestone compared to 37% last year.

In S5, the proportion gaining five Higher awards has risen from 13.6% to 15.9%.

Attainment is also improving for young people in the Highlands’ most deprived areas, with gains recorded at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher levels.

While there was a small dip in Higher English, Maths and Applications of Maths saw a 4.3% rise in passes, climbing to 73.9%.

Councillor John Finlayson, Chair of the Education Committee, said today is a day to celebrate the dedication of pupils, teachers and families alike.

“These results show the hard work and commitment of our young people and school staff, with improvements across several key areas,” he said.

“To anyone disappointed by their grades, remember support is available.

“Speak to your teachers or contact Skills Development Scotland.

“There are always options and next steps to explore.”

Assistant Chief Executive for People, Kate Lackie, also praised the effort behind the results.

“I want to congratulate every young person receiving their results today,” she said.

“Whether grades are what you hoped for or not, this moment marks years of study and determination.

“Exams are important, but they are not the only path to success.

“We are proud of the wide range of skills and opportunities our young people develop in Highland schools.”

Help is available for anyone needing guidance, from school support staff to national advice lines.
