Historic figures are returning to two iconic Highland landmarks this October as part of a nationwide Living History programme.
From Saturday 11 October, visitors to Fort George and Urquhart Castle will meet costumed performers portraying characters from Scotland’s storied past.
At Fort George, the barracks will come to life with Military Police, Seaforth Highlanders, and others sharing stories from the site’s military history.
These performances will run on 11–12 October and from 15–19 October.
Over at Urquhart Castle, weekdays will feature a resident knight who’ll reveal what life was like in the medieval Highlands, from castle duties to battlefield tales.
On weekends, a cast of changing characters will take visitors deeper into Urquhart’s dramatic past.
Performances there run daily from 11–24 October.
The events are part of Historic Environment Scotland’s (HES) Living History programme, which runs across 15 sites nationwide and is included in standard admission.
“Autumn is a great time to visit our sites,” said Gillian Urquhart, Events Manager at HES.
“This October we’re offering the chance to converse with a courtier, meet a medieval knight, speak to a royal King and Queen, and more.”
She added:
“Our Living History programme is the perfect way to find out more about the people who lived and worked at our sites and bring the past vividly to life along the way.”
Entry is free for Historic Scotland members and Explorer Pass holders, with the latter offering access to dozens of sites over 14 days.
Whether it’s a sword-wielding knight or a soldier standing guard, the programme promises to enchant families and history lovers alike, all in the stunning Highland settings of Fort George and Urquhart Castle.
