Households Urged to Check Electricity Meters Ahead of June Switch Off

Households across Moray are being encouraged to check their electricity meters as an important change comes into effect this month.

From Monday 30 June, the Radio Teleswitch Service, which supports a certain type of electricity meter, will be permanently switched off across the UK.

Without this technology, some meters may stop working properly, which could lead to disruptions in electricity and heating supplies.

Only a small number of homes in Moray are thought to have these older meters, but residents are being urged to check in good time.

Moray Council’s Older Person’s Co-Champion, Councillor Sonya Warren, said it was vital to be aware of the change.

“If you have a Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) meter, your electricity supplier should already have been in touch to arrange an upgrade before the deadline,” she said.

“If you are not sure, there are a few simple ways to check.

“You are more likely to have an RTS meter if your home uses storage heaters or is heated entirely by electricity.

“There may also be a box next to your meter marked ‘Radio Teleswitch’.”

She added that homes without a gas supply or that benefit from cheaper electricity at certain times of day may also be using this system.

“If you are unsure, it is worth calling your electricity supplier for reassurance,” said Councillor Warren.

If you do not know who your electricity supplier is, you can check this easily on the Ofgem website.

Fellow Older Person’s Co-Champion, Councillor Peter Bloomfield, said most people would not be affected, but it was still worth checking.

“There is no need to panic, but it is very sensible to take a moment to check,” he said.

“It is also important to look out for friends, neighbours or relatives who may be more vulnerable and ensure they know about this change.”

Both councillors also issued a warning about the risk of scams related to the meter switch-off.

Councillor Warren said:

“Unfortunately, there will be those who try to take advantage of this situation.

“If you are contacted by anyone asking for payment to replace your meter, this is likely to be a scam.”

Councillor Bloomfield added:

“Your supplier will replace your meter free of charge.

“If your supplier tells you they cannot replace your meter before 30 June, you have the right to complain.

“They must make sure a suitable alternative is in place before the deadline.”

Further information about the RTS meter switch-off can be found on the Ofgem website
