Seven apprentices working behind the scenes at Inverness Caledonian Thistle have been recognised for their contribution to the club and the wider Highland economy.

Highlands and Islands MSP Emma Roddick visited the Sarens PSG Stadium during Scottish Apprenticeship Week to meet the young people currently learning their trade at the club.

The visit, organised by Skills Development Scotland, gave the MSP the opportunity to hear directly from the apprentices about the range of roles they carry out at the stadium when they are not on the pitch.

As a regular supporter who attends matches at the ground, Ms Roddick also toured the club and spoke with the apprentices about their experiences of earning while learning.

Scottish Apprenticeship Week, held from 2 to 6 March, highlights the importance of work based learning for young people and local businesses across Scotland.

In communities such as Inverness and the wider Highlands, apprenticeships play a key role in helping young people gain skills while building careers close to home.

Emma Roddick said it was encouraging to see the next generation of local talent developing their careers at the club.

“It was fantastic to be back at the stadium during Scottish Apprenticeship Week to meet the seven apprentices who are such a vital part of the team.

“As a regular in the stands on matchdays, I know how much this club means to Inverness, and seeing the hard work these young people put into their roles is very reassuring as we head towards promotion this season.

“Apprenticeships are a brilliant way for people to stay and work in the Highlands, gaining high quality skills while contributing to the local economy.

“I was impressed by the intelligence and dedication shown by the group; they are a real credit to the club and the city.

“We really need to support local talent if we want Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Scotland FC to be competitive.

“I took onboard some of the challenges shared by apprentices and enjoyed my time with them.

“I’ll keep an eye out for them all as their careers grow!”

The visit formed part of wider efforts to highlight the role of apprenticeships in supporting youth employment and skills development across the Highlands and Islands.

Emma Roddick has previously raised the importance of vocational training and community led initiatives in the Scottish Parliament.

She has also called for greater access to apprenticeship opportunities to help ensure young people can build careers in the region without leaving the Highlands.
