Job Vacancies – Ferries Trainee Deckhand Posts

Shetland Islands Council has recently announced a number of trainee deckhand job vacancies, offering career-graded employment on the Council’s ferry fleet.

There are opportunities across different locations, with trainee posts advertised for Fetlar, Unst, Yell, Whalsay and Bressay.

The posts are career-graded with a starting salary dependent upon relevant seafaring qualifications and experience, with ongoing supervision and further training provided.   

The starting salary is £24,260 per annum rising to £28,817 per annum, on completion of training and relevant qualifications.

Employees will be required to attend college to gain a necessary maritime qualifications, including STCW seafarers certifications, alongside familiarisation and sea time on board vessels.   

The posts offer an employment opportunity into a marine-sector career aboard the Council’s inter-island ferry fleet.

Shetland Islands Council currently operates a fleet of eleven vessels which operate year-round as a lifeline transport service to Shetland’s populated islands.

The deadline for applications to these trainee posts is Friday 15th December 2023.
