Jubilee Flag to Fly in Stornoway

A flag raising event will be held in Perceval Square, Stornoway tomorrow evening (2nd) to mark the start of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Kenny Macleod, will raise the Jubilee flag whilst the Lewis and Harris Youth Pipe Band and the Lewis and Harris Youth Concert Band will perform, starting at 9.15pm.

The Lewis and Harris youth pipe band have registered to play at this event joining pipers and drummers around the world to play the tune written especially for the Queens Jubilee “Diu Regnare” which means “Long to Reign”.

The tune was composed by champion piper Stuart Liddell.

Following this the Lewis and Harris youth concert band bugle player will play another tune written especially for the Queen called “Majesty”.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar Convener, Kenny Macleod, said:

“We are proud to be part of this momentous celebration.

“It is only appropriate that this unique milestone in history is marked with music and I am particularly pleased to have The Lewis and Harris youth pipe band and the Lewis and Harris youth concert band playing.

“We are honoured to be part of this special event for Her Majesty, The Queen’s 70th year as our Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth on her Platinum Jubilee.”
