Florence Nisbet has reached a remarkable milestone after 60 years running Kinlocheil Post Office, serving her community near Fort William since February 1966.
Originally born in Glenfinnan, Florence moved to Kinlocheil at the age of three and has remained rooted in the area ever since.
After leaving school, she had hoped to work at the telephone exchange, but limited transport options led her down a different path when the opportunity arose to take on the local post office.
She applied successfully and began running the branch from her home, a role she continues to this day.
Over the decades, Florence has become a familiar and trusted figure in the community, serving generations of local residents as well as visitors passing through the area.
The role of the Post Office has changed significantly during her time, but the branch has adapted to meet modern needs.
With bank closures across rural areas, customers now rely on the branch for everyday services including cash withdrawals, deposits, bill payments and balance checks.
The rise in online shopping has also brought new demands, with Florence handling parcel collections, returns and deliveries for services such as Amazon, eBay and Vinted.
Her connection to the community runs deeper than transactions.
Florence recalls helping a hiker preparing to climb Ben Nevis who needed new boots, arranging for them to be delivered to the branch in time for his trip.
At 84, she remains active and continues to enjoy her work and the people she serves.
Florence Nisbet said:
“I’m still in good health and I have no plans to retire at the moment.
“I really love people, and I love being able to serve them, so I enjoy my job.
“I have got to know people so well.
“I’m proud that I was able to keep my branch open during Covid as people wanted to stay local.”
Her dedication has been recognised with a Post Office 60 Years Long Service Award.
Post Office Area Manager James Mackay said:
“Florence is a lovely lady.
“She is very popular with customers who enjoy having a chat whilst using the Post Office.
“Florence brightens up people’s days as well as providing essential services.
“I want to thank Florence for her incredible 60 years’ service to this community, she is at the heart of this village.”
Florence’s story reflects the enduring role of local services in rural communities, where familiarity, trust and human connection remain just as important as the services provided.
