Labour Rule Out Return to European Custom Union

“Sir Keir Starmer has no desire to represent the people of Scotland”, the SNP has warned, after his Party rejected the possibility of re-entering the customs union if Labour form the next UK government.

It follows the Labour Party’s Shadow Cabinet Office Minister, Nick Thomas-Symonds, saying Labour “are committed to making Brexit work”.

Alyn Smith MP, the SNP’s Europe and EU Accession spokesperson, has said the Labour leaders “refusal to accept the economic vandalism that is Brexit will continue to hammer households and business”.

Commenting, the SNP’s Europe and EU Accession spokesperson, Alyn Smith MP said:

“It’s clear that Sir Keir Starmer has no desire to represent the people of Scotland.

“Poll after poll shows that the people of Scotland want to rejoin the EU and the world’s largest single market at the earliest opportunity – after being dragged out by Westminster against their will.

“And yet despite this, Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed that an incoming Labour government will remain focused on preserving the Tories’ failed Brexit Britain economic model – signalling once again that the views of the Scottish people mean nothing to him.

“Starmer’s refusal to accept the economic vandalism of Brexit will continue to hammer households and businesses in Scotland.

“At the upcoming election, the SNP are the only party offering the people of Scotland an escape from broken Brexit Britain and a route back into the European Union with access to world’s largest single market through independence.”
